All training In Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) is organised by the Intercollegiate Board for Intensive Care Medicine (IBTICM). The curriculum has been approved by PMETB.
Trainees in ICM come from a variety of base specialties, including anaesthesia, the foundation programme, core medical training, respiratory medicine and occasionally other medical and surgical specialties. Competencies expected to be obtained at various stages of training have been defined and it is expected that all trainees doing a module in ICM , irrespective of their parent specialty, will obtain these competencies.
All trainees must complete the documentation which has been developed by the IBTICM during their module. This documentation is highlighted below in Table 1. Requirements for additional documentation may be required by a parent specialty.
Table 1. Competency Training Documentation
ACCS
During the ICM module all ACCS trainees will be expected to complete the Basic syllabus for which the indicative duration is 3 months.
ACCS trainees doing more than 3 months training in ICM will follow the Intermediate syllabus in part or in full, for which the indicative duration is 6 months. The exact units will depend on the length of the ICM module and local circumstances.
Any trainee who is unable for any reason satisfactorily to attain all the core competences during their ACCS training must complete the remainder as part of their primary specialty CCT programme if they wish to pursue a joint CCT in ICM. Core ICM training is also a part of the Curriculum for the CCT in Anaesthesia and similarly, if the competences are not acquired during ACCS, they must be acquired during Specialty training.
Assessments
During a module in ICM, trainees will be expected to obtain a minimum number of CBD's, mini-CEX'S, CBD'S. Requirements are detailed in Table 2. Trainees belonging to specialties using e-portfolio must use the electronic forms in their e-portfolio. Trainees belonging to specialties not using the e-portfolios must use the paper forms designed by the IBTICM. An assessment blueprint, approved by PMETB, linking the ICM curriculum to methods of assessment can is available at;

Multisource Feedback
Depending on the stage of training, trainees will be required to complete a multi-source feedback. Trainees belonging to specialties using e-portfolio must use the electronic forms in their e-portfolio. Trainees belonging to specialties not using the e-portfolios must use the paper forms designed by the IBTICM. Table 2 illustrates the number of MSF's required.
Expanded Case Summaries
During an ICM module, all trainees, apart from those in the foundation programme, must complete a number of written cases, as shown in Table 2. Instructions on how these cases should be completed, and the structure of the cases can be obtained at the following link:
http://www.rcoa.ac.uk/ibticm/docs/Expanded%20Case%20Summaries%20(Nov%2008).pdf
The cases must be forwarded to the IBTICM tutor for marking. A "sign-off" form must be completed by the IBTICM tutor.
Logbook
All trainees must keep an electronic logbook during their module. Instructions on how to complete the logbook can be found on the first page of the document. Maintenance of the logbook will be necessary to complete the module satisfactorily.
